Do I need to do a podcast?
Nov 18, 2020Podcasting is such a great tool for Real Estate Professionals, podcasting will reach a big audience, build know like trust and generate business for you. Today we get to spend a moment and talk with Danny Ozment and Podcast Professional that will help us learn more about what it takes to do a podcast! Listen, take those notes and find ways to implement this. I completely believe YouTube and podcasting are going to be required tools for us!
Why Podcasting
Danny Tells us 93% of listeners listen to at least half if not all of an episode. this means that we have their attention while we are talking to them. Some of my research tells me that 50% homes are podcasts fans and 90% of listening is done at home(thanks podcasting host .org ) This ability to be in their ear and is almost impossible to get in these days!
How Do I start!
Podcasting can feel intimidating, it doesn't have to be. The best way to start is to do it! Danny tells us we need to know a couple things. We need to know our why and need to know our audience. Once we know these it will become easier. Also be aware unless you are doing these live. You can edit them and know one will ever know your mistakes!
What do I need
There is stuff you need but you definitely do not need to spend a lot of money to start a podcast. To be honest you might already have it. Audio is very important so the better it is the better your podcast will be. Some equipment that you have that could be used but not ideal, your laptop, or your phone will have audio that can get you started. Below are some recommendations that will kick it up a notch
Microphones
Audia technica atr2100 - Danny recommends this mic(so do I) it is a great dynamic mic, which means it wont pick up surrounding outside noises.
Samsun q2u - another great dynamic mic. like the audia great quality and inexpensive.
Editing
Audacity - is a great free software that will edit your podcast for you, this is a great beginner tool just be ware you will have some training on it that will be necessary and a couple additional downloads to get it podcast producing ready. completely free!
auphonics - while not a true editor, I like auphonics cause it makes sure it is itunes ready. this also has a cost if you are producing over 2 hours a month
Hidenburg - this is the editor i use currently, I started with audacity and graduated to this, what I like about this tool is I find it user friendly and very low training time to d what I need from it(which is little) I am definitely not using all the functionality.
Protools first - Danny Likes this tool and it is very nice, the most complicated part of it is the installation, but once you get past this it runs great! It is designed for audio professionals the First version is free and is all we need as podcasters
Hosting
LIbsyn - is one of the original and most popular hosting platforms most of the big podcasters still use it and it is a solid hosting solution. If I had any concern over it, they update the function of the product quickly but the interface took a long time to update
Podbean - is the one I use. I like it cause not only is it a modern UI but it also has great customer service and they made it extremely easy for me to get my podcast working with all the site, itunes, google, alexa, spotify and more!
anchor.fm - is free and for many of that is a great way to start, all I will say to this is read their rules and guidelines. it is not real clear who owns the content.
What Do I say
We got a lot of great information from Danny on this, one of the best thing is his roadmap he is giving to us. in the mean time lets talk about a few ideas that can not only get you started but keep you going!
- What your podcast is about
- Why you started the podcast
- your story
- your top 3 questions
- Market info
- local interviews
- community events
Bottom line come from giving as this will works well for you! Trust me, you know your audience and since you know your audience you know exactly what share with them!
I know you are saying I dont have time for this. Here is what I can tell you with conversations that I have had with other realtors doing this. this is just part of your prospecting time. schedule it and it will work!
How often and how long do I do this
As far as time goes this is a great question! Danny says the time really depends on you and your topic there really is not length time limit to your podcast. As far as how often you need to do it as often as you will need to be kept top of mind. typically you see most of these be 30 min in length each and done weekly.
you can batch these if you need, and I do recommend this cause again this is part of your prospecting time and you can get a lot done in a little time! Danny warns that while this is a good idea, you will have to pay attention that your episodes dont become dated before it launches, or that a more pressing topic needs to be put in its place instead.
I will leave you with this thought in podcasting. For realtors this is a great way to be in their ear and form a strong friendship with your audience. build that know, like, trust!
